- Abstract: In traditional high gloss alkyd enamels, conventional alkyd resins are dissolved in an organic solvent, such as mineral spirit. Due to health and environmental concerns, there is an increasing interest in waterborne alkyd enamels. Oil-in-water emulsions of long oil alkyd resins typically used in solvent-borne enamels are therefore an interesting alternative. Suitable emulsifying agents and special equipment which provide high-energy input are usually required to generate stable oil-in-water alkyd emulsions containing small particles. In this webinar, APE-free emulsifying agents designed to promote easy emulsification of long oil alkyds using low shear mixing equipment will be presented. These emulsifying agents have optimized ratios of anionic and non-ionic surfactants that remarkably allow water-in-oil emulsions of long oil alkyds to undergo phase inversion at 70 °C, generating stable oil-in-water alkyd emulsions with high solid content, solid content up to 72 wt%, and small particle size, of about 200 nm. All this while using low shear mixing equipment during the emulsification process.
